A wiki is a collaborative website that allows multiple users to add and edit content. Wikispaces is one of the common free wiki hosting sites on the web. There is an educational version in which teachers can create classes with usernames and passwords for students. Teacher accounts are free and can be upgraded (for a fee) to access additional components. But the basic components are sufficient for a beginning user.
Some of the features Wikispaces provides for teachers are the following:
- Have the option of creating one of the following
- Public Wiki (anyone can view and edit)
- Protected Wiki (anyone can view, only members can edit)
- Private Wiki (only members can view and edit)
- Student accounts can be created without using email addresses.
- NOTE: An email account is created through wikispaces which is not able to be monitored unless teacher logs in as the students. (e.g. vgarcia2@members.wikispaces.com). Also, students would be able to create an online profile.
Wikis use a domain name. If you choose to create a wiki, make sure that write down the domain name, your username, and password.
Sample of a Wiki with Domain Name
Domain Name: http://tech-4-elementary.wikispaces.com/
Username: myusername
Password: mypassword
If you decide you want to delete the wiki, it is irreversible. You will lose all of the information you posted, and the workspace (name of the wiki) will never be able to be used by you or anyone else. In essence, make sure you really want to create a wiki before you create one. J
